Why is My Refrigerator Noisy?

A noisy refrigerator is the worst. If the refrigerator in your house seems to be a bit louder than normal there are a couple of simple place that you can look at while trying to find a solution. There are a lot of fans on a standard refrigerator that often create loud noises. The refrigerator could also not be level too. Or you may have a compressor that’s wearing down. If your refrigerator is louder when the ice maker is making ice, the noises might be from a broken a water valve.

There are a couple of basic things that must be be checked. Like is your refrigerator too full? A refrigerator that is too could result in glass containers and other items to clink and clank together. This can cause a lot of annoying sounds inside of the refrigerator that’s not ideal because the refrigerator is on and producing a small vibration.

If you own a refrigerator that has a built-in water dispenser or ice maker but you do not have the water hooked up, be positive you turned off the dispenser and the ice maker. There is almost always a button on the dispenser that can be used to turn off the dispenser. And with the ice maker, you simply need to lift the metal bar. If the refrigerator was installed right by a wall, it could cause the standard operating noise to seem louder than it really is. This is due to the echoing of the sound of the refrigerator. Pull it out a little away from the kitchen wall and see if that helps. A refrigerator needs to be about 2 inches away from the back wall to limit the noise.

If it isn’t any of these basic and easier fixes, it is time to dive on in. Most of the time, the refrigerator fans are the reason for a refrigerator that’s loud. There are fan blades that will often get clogged and dirty. Sometimes the fan motors do as well. There is a condenser fan in the refrigerator and an evaporator on refrigerators too. Many times the condenser fan gets a coating of dust on it and then should be cleaned on a regular basis. If the coating gets too heavy it might wear out the bearings inside of the fan’s motor.

Clean the Fan & Refrigerator Condenser Coils

First, the refrigerator. Most of the time you will want a wrench or screwdriver to get the back panel off from the refrigerator. As soon as it’s off you will see a fan inside. If it’s full of dirt and dust, grab a cloth and gently clean it off. While you are in there look at the coils as well. The coils are typically right there and covered in the same grime and dust that the fan is. Cleaning the coils only takes a couple of minutes and it will help the refrigerator run efficiently. This is actually a very common problem that can cause a refrigerator to run non-stop.

Spin the fan blades. Do they spin freely? If not it means the fan motor bearings are broken. This is an easy fix, as the fan assembly is usually a part that can be ordered and can be replaced by just disconnecting it. But, before attempting this, ensure the refrigerator is unplugged. Do the same process for the evaporator fan, which is typically located behind the freezer unit. This is not typically the issue, as this fan is concealed inside the walls of the refrigerator. But, when the noises are coming from the top of the refrigerator that’s the place to check.
